This specimen was identified by Jay Justice and matches the photo in the reference document exactly. However the spores are confusing. I don't know if the mature spore is the one I described or some of the others in the spore photo. The darker ones appear to be the more mature spore while the clearer ones appear to be immature spores. Also, the spore print is the black substance on the outer surface that is between the globes created by the globe collapsing on itself. I obtained the spore from such an area on the outer peridium and pressed it between the glass slide and the cover slip.
On 7/30/2006 another specimen was collected at Babler State Park in St. Louis Missouri. This was the first time this species was documented in St. Louis. There are three photos of the specimen in the "Voucher Photos" folder on C drive titled "223 - MO". |
